Montabäuer curiosities

Storybook sheds light on bizarre aspects of the city's history

The town historian Bernd Schrupp has compiled curious stories from Montabaur's history in his new booklet "Montabaurer Merkwürdigkeiten" (Montabaur Oddities) - based on historical sources and memories. From Beethoven's stopover to a squat in the 1980s, he shows the town from its unusual side. The new booklet is published by the town of Montabaur and will be available free of charge at the end of June at the tourist information centre on the Großer Markt in Montabaur.

Five centuries of city history -
told with humour and authenticity

A famous composer, a squatted villa, quirky characters and moving memories: The new booklet, which has once again been produced in close co-operation between Bernd Schrupp, the Tourst-Information and the town of Montabaur, shows Montabaur from its unusual side. Quirky, exciting - and always authentic.

Following the three successful booklets on the town fortifications, the cobbler's trade and the castle, Schrupp is now contributing content for another new booklet. This time it's all about stories, curiosities and anecdotes from five centuries of the cobbler's town. In the process, he has come across many bizarre incidents. The stories are freely based on historical sources and memories of curious events in Montabaur. Many of the stories were written by Schrupp himself, with Jürgen Ketzer, Franz Josef Löwenguth, K.K. Meister, Paul Possel-Dölken, Uli Schmidt, Paul Widner and Stefan Wild as well as the town archives also contributing to the booklet.

The impetus for this was a lecture that Schrupp once gave together with Paul Widner, who died in 2020, in a retirement home. Widner was a local politician, teacher at Mons Tabor Grammar School and city guide. Schrupp has now developed a collection of these stories from the joint manuscript. They provide fascinating insights into the life of the city.

Who knew that Ludwig van Beethoven stopped off in Montabaur on his journey from Bonn to Vienna? Or that young people were so committed to fighting for their own youth centre in the 1980s that they even occupied a building? Incidentally, the youth centre celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2022.

"The first three booklets that we published with Bernd Schrupp are very popular with both our guests and the local population," says Karin Maas, Head of Tourist Information. She is delighted about the expansion of the popular series. City mayor Melanie Leicher adds: "History is not just about what was - it's also about what you can still smile about today."

The graphic design of the booklet was created by Katja Breidenbach-Schütz (37punkt agency) and illustrates some of the exciting stories with original photos.

Like its predecessors, the booklet will be available free of charge from the Montabaur Tourist Information Centre (Großer Markt) at the beginning of June. Previous publications in the series by Bernd Schrupp include the titles Fortifications of the town of Montabaur. Stadtmauer, Pforten & Türme, Montabaur - von Schustern, Schusterjungen & Mon-Stilettos and Das Schloss Montabaur - ein eindrucksvolle Kulisse für die Stadt und die Region,
