Wäller Paw Trails: Hiking with dogs in the southern Westerwald

Welcome to the southern Westerwald—a true paradise for you and your four-legged friend! With the Wäller Paw Trails, we have tested our most beautiful hiking trails for their absolute “paw suitability.” Idyllic stream valleys await you for refreshing dips, wonderful shady forests, and fragrant meadows to explore.

Whether you're looking for a leisurely stroll or a challenging day trip, every sniffer will find the perfect trail here.

Packing list: What to put in your hiking backpack

To ensure that the tour remains relaxed for everyone, you should remember the following things:

  • Well-fitting dog harness & drag line: Gives your dog enough freedom to explore the surroundings safely.
  • Water supply: Sufficient water and a foldable water bowl are essential.
  • Snacks for in between meals: Small treats are great, but please avoid large, full meals during the hike to protect your dog's stomach.
  • First aid kit: Be sure to bring tick tweezers, wound spray, paw balm, and possibly paw shoes.
  • Documents: The vaccination certificate or pet passport should always be with you in case of emergencies.

Important addresses in case of emergency

If something happens while you're out and about, or if the mud has been too deep, you're well looked after in the southern Westerwald:

  • Veterinarians nearby: e.g., Bernd Sonnenwald (Montabaur, 02602 3511) or Kleintier-Praxis Noll (Mogendorf, 02623 7975320).
  • Dog grooming salons: e.g., Die Fellwerkstatt (Großholbach, 0157 52804826).

Rules of the game for nature

Harmonious coexistence is important to us. Please observe the following rules on our trails:

  • Leash requirement: Dogs must be kept on a leash in all towns, on public roads, and in public facilities in the municipality of Montabaur.
  • Breeding and nesting season: From April 1 to July 15, your dog must be kept on a leash in forests and meadows to protect wildlife.
  • Droppings: Please always clean up after your dog, especially in built-up areas.
  • Listed dogs: Dogs of so-called “dangerous” breeds (e.g., pit bull terriers) must always be kept on a leash and wear a muzzle.
