Description

On the well over 26-kilometer-long bike route, there is a lot to see, but I begin in Höhr-Grenzhausen. The town is the center of the Kannenbäckerland with its many ceramics businesses. Accordingly, there is an interesting ceramics museum and a private ceramics collection in Höhr-Grenzhausen.

From my starting point, I reach Alarmstange after about six kilometers and shortly after the 540-meter-high Köppel. At the foot of the hill, I can refresh myself at the Köppel hut, then climb up and enjoy the fantastic view.

Alternatively, I dine at the Reiterklause Horressen, which lies just before Montabaur on the way. This town is also worth a visit. Among the sights are the castle and the neo-Gothic town hall. Afterwards, I cycle back through the forest. In Hillscheid, three potteries and a local history museum await, and further on, I come upon the Limesturm. There, I am already very close to my destination in Höhr-Grenzhausen.

Approach

Motorway exits:

  • BAB 3, Cologne - Frankfurt: Exit at motorway interchange 39-Dreieck Dernbach to follow the signs towards Trier/Koblenz/A48
  • BAB 3, Frankfurt - Cologne: Exit onto E44 and follow the signs for Trier/Koblenz/A48, continue on A48/E44, at exit 12-Höhr-Grenzhausen head towards Höhr-Grenzhausen/U42
  • From Koblenz: via B9 and A48

Public transport

The Grenzau railway station is about a quarter of an hour away by bike, but the ascent to Höhr-Grenzhausen is challenging.

The tour can also be reached in about 15 minutes from Montabaur station.

Parking

Parking spaces are available at the forest inn Flürchen (Bergstraße).

Directions

I start at the southeastern corner of Höhr-Grenzhausen on the Wällerweg at the edge of the forest. From here, I turn left and pass the forest inn "Flürchen." In a large arc northwards, I reach the shelter at Vorderster Bach, shortly after the hut "Am kromme Esel." Here the path turns southeast, then southwest. I then come across Thiel's hut and from here head sharply east. The path takes me to Alarmstange, the telecommunications tower, and the Vodafone mast. Then it turns northwards, later heading east again. This repeats, finally followed by a sharp triangle to the south. Near Montabaur, I keep south along the outskirts and come upon the Reiterklause Horressen. I briefly enter Horressen, then cycle through the forest again. I circle the Lippersberg and can finally stop at the pizzeria "Lazio" in Hillscheid. After a few kilometers northward, I reach my destination point in Höhr-Grenzhausen.

Equipment

For bags and backpacks, not only your back offers space on a bike tour – the weight of the equipment should ideally be distributed over several parts of the body and the bike. Riding wind, rain, or sun can cause very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day tour, you should always have suitable change clothes on hand to be prepared for any eventuality. In addition to other important equipment, necessary tools and repair items should not be forgotten. At high speed, it's easy to take a wrong turn on a bike tour: traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or GPS device help with orientation. You should always have a small emergency kit with you.

Tips

Anyone wishing to explore Höhr-Grenzhausen and Montabaur and enjoy the bike tour with its numerous sights should plan at least two days.
