In the tour planner we inform you under the tab "Current info" about temporary route changes, closures and detours.
That's truly legendary! In the southern Westerwald, the themed route "Montabäurer Mären" invites hikers to truly legendary experiences.
The 17 storyboards are placed along the hiking trail exactly where, according to tradition, the scene of the respective story was. Fairy tales from the area around Montabaur – Montabäurer Mären.
To make the legendary hiking trail even more interesting and varied, there is now a digital "on the way package." The new offer includes an interactive hiking map with explanations of the sculptures as well as service info about dining, accommodation, and public transport options in the region. With the legend quiz, hikers can test their acquired legends knowledge on the go, and those who can recite the solution sentence in the Wäller Platt dialect receive a small reward at the Tourist Information in Montabaur. The "on the way package" can now be downloaded free of charge at: www.sagenhafter-westerwald.com.
Coming from Montabaur via L318, you can reach Nentershausen as well as coming from the north and south via the A3 motorway, Diez exit, and then directly via L318 to Nentershausen.
You can reach the start point of the tour in Nentershausen by bus line 450 (Montabaur-Nentershausen-Diez-Limburg) or 575 (Diez-Hambach-Nentershausen). The hike information board is located directly at the bus stop.
From Montabaur ICE station directly to the starting point, take line 450.
You will find parking spaces on Rosenstraße directly by the church in Nentershausen.
You start your point-to-point hike in Nentershausen at the bus stop. An information board provides details about the route. The marking signs guide you along the main road and then to the right across a pedestrian crossing. Straight ahead you go to the cemetery, where you turn right. At the federal road, turn left, go under the motorway, and again turn left at the Gebharz clay pit. The path enters a tall beech forest and leads you to the ICE railway track. Through a tunnel, you reach the other side and keep to the right along the tracks. At the next intersection, turn left and hike slightly downhill through a tall beech forest. After a good stretch, a path branches off to the left. At this junction is a distinctive bench, the Miners. From there, continue straight ahead. A very beautiful section follows through a lovely valley along a small stream, which you eventually cross. On the opposite side, a forest path takes you again under the railway line. The path changes into a paved lane and leaves the forest. You cross a country road and walk between fields. Passing a transmission mast, you reach an intersection. The markings point you to a meadow path to the right. After passing a farm, you go downhill into the village of Nomborn. At the first house, turn left and walk along the main street, past the church, and after the last street, turn left to leave the small village. Initially, the path loses some height before you approach the hill "Bornkasten." The hill is circled to the right, and the path leads you along fantastic basalt formations. Via a trail, you go downhill to a signpost. Turn right and after a short distance reach the Studentenmühle, a nicely located refreshment stop. After crossing the Eisenbach, initially keep straight ahead, then turn left along horse pastures and into the forest. The forest path runs above the stream, and you reach a junction with a branch to the Kautenmühle. Continue straight ahead towards the Gelbachtal. Again, you go under the ICE track and stay on the main path in the valley. Surreal wooden sculptures line the path edge. Upon reaching Gelbachtal, take the forest path to the right at the signpost. Between young beeches and tall spruces, the path runs through the valley. At the next signpost, turn right and walk uphill in switchbacks. In the tall spruce forest, the forest path steadily gains height. A marked detour to a viewpoint is worthwhile. The spot is excellent for a rest. Continue uphill to the stone cross. There, turn sharply left, downhill on a path into a valley. Take the forest path to the right and follow the stream. After crossing the watercourse, turn left to the "Bildches Eich" – a small chapel in the middle of the forest. The markings guide you further, over a bridge to a forest road, which you take to the left. Shortly after, you reach the small village of Wirzenborn. A refreshment stop invites you to linger. Continue past the church and steeply uphill on a stations path. Over a hill, with a beautiful view of Montabaur Castle, proceed down again to the Gelbach. Follow the river to a former mill and reach, under a large bridge, the first houses of Montabaur. The path goes into the first street to the right, then immediately to the left. At the end of the street, cross a bridge and head towards the town center. Proceed uphill into the center of Montabaur. The market square with its beautiful buildings, cafés, and restaurants deserves special attention. There is also the Tourist Information with further hiking tips. To complete the route, turn right and walk uphill between old half-timbered houses to the castle, then half-right down. After the building complex, turn left into the forest on a path. This circles the castle until you meet a street, which you follow to the right. At the roundabout, continue straight ahead and reach Montabaur station via a pedestrian crossing.
Please wear sturdy footwear as well as weather-appropriate and functional clothing that protects you from cold and wet or heat and sun. Also take enough fluids with you, as there are not refreshment opportunities everywhere.
