It is worth planning more than the approximately three hours riding time. There is much to see right from the start. In Wirzenborn, there is a motorcycle museum with rare models and, a little further away, a pilgrimage chapel. A detour is also recommended near Reckenthal, where a sculpture trail with wonderful wooden objects is set up. I also enjoy a fantastic view of Montabaur Castle and the Gelbach Valley from here. I will visit the Wild and Leisure Park Gackenbach, a deer park, another time as it requires more time. Now I have the choice of taking a break in the country inn Zum Wiesengrund in Gackenbach or a little later at Hübinger Treff. I enjoy the dishes in both restaurants. In any case, I visit the relaxing water treading basin between the two places. Then the route takes me back to Wirzenborn over many stations, where I finish off with homemade cake at Wirzenborner Liss.
By bus line 453 from Montabaur (ZOB, Konrad-Adenauer-Platz) to Wirzenborn
Coming from Montabaur, immediately right at L313 or at the pilgrimage church Wirzenborn in the village center
The route begins at the intersection of L 313 and Kapellenstraße in Wirzenborn, very close to the Gelbach, which gave its name to the valley. The place is at about 200 meters altitude. I follow Kapellenstraße westward and ride through the village to the north, then through the forest to the northeast. The route takes me on natural and gravel paths over ten kilometers relatively flat until just before Gackenbach. Only here does the path start to ascend, reaching the highest point behind Hübingen in the southern forest of the Nassau Nature Park (449 meters). Then a pleasant descent begins to Oberelbert, followed by a second small ascent and another descent back towards Wirzenborn. From the many viewpoints, in good weather, I can see south to the Taunus and north to the Upper Westerwald, among other sights. For the good 33 kilometers of the circular course, I estimate about three hours of riding time without visits.
Good basic fitness required.
For bags and backpacks on a bike ride, space is not only on the back – the weight of the equipment should ideally be distributed over several body and bike parts. Wind, rain, or sun can result in very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day route, you should always have appropriate change clothing on hand to be prepared for any eventuality. Besides other important equipment, necessary tools and repair supplies should not be forgotten. At high speed, it is easy to take a wrong turn on a bike ride: traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or GPS device serve for orientation. You should also always have a small emergency kit with you.
The listed historic town center of Wirzenborn invites you to take a walk. Numerous half-timbered houses, a war memorial, a stations trail, and a running fountain are part of it.
