Discover Montabaur smart

New discovery trail brings the town's history, architecture and medieval life in Montabaur to life in a smart way

Discover cities, villages and natural landscapes across Germany with your smartphone as your guide - this is made possible by the non-profit project "Stadt-Land-Erleben". There is now also a discovery trail in Montabaur.

On the 2.3 km circular tour through Montabaur, you can get exciting information on history, architecture, Jewish and medieval life directly on your smartphone at 16 stations. The discovery trail can be started as a web app without downloading or registering. The user goes to the website www.stadt-land-erleben.de, selects the tour through Montabaur on the map and is then navigated from station to station.

The mascot Lugo is present on all tours. Quiz questions and mini-games round off the tour. "So there's something for everyone and even children can join in enthusiastically," explains Tanja Huppertz.

A true project of the heart

The two women put their hearts and souls into making discovery in public spaces possible for anyone with a thirst for knowledge. "Our current 130 or so discovery trails make it possible for everyone to experience and understand the wide range of topics that can be discovered on our doorstep. We want to facilitate access to information," explains Tanja Huppertz, a qualified educationalist.

The non-profit project is financed exclusively by donations and grants. The discovery trail through Montabaur was created solely through voluntary work. Town mayor Melanie Leicher is delighted with the discovery trail and the commitment that the two initiators have brought to this project. "They have created a modern approach to the history of our region that invites people of all ages to discover it," she emphasises. The mayor paid particular tribute to the voluntary work that has led to the development of a unique digital guide that is an enrichment for Montabaur.

Compact information

You learn, for example, that Montabaur can look back on a long and eventful history. Illustrations, reconstructions, site plans and maps make the town's history tangible and vivid. No special knowledge is required, as any unfamiliar terms are briefly summarised and explained in a separate dictionary. There are also graphics and videos.

Very different topics are covered on the tour. "Our aim is to make the local connections visible," explains Carolin Huppertz. "Education is the basis for mastering the challenges of the future," adds the initiator.

"It's about exploring the environment, understanding the connections and appreciating cultural assets and monuments," continues geologist Dr Carolin Huppertz, who initiated the project together with Tanja Huppertz.

"The discovery trail brings the Jewish life of Montabaur and many other aspects of our long, diverse history to life," explains head of the town archives Dennis Röhrig "This makes topics and stories that often remain hidden accessible to a wide audience."

The discovery trails make you want to take a closer look. You get to know your surroundings in a completely new and much more intensive way, say the two initiators. "With the new discovery trail, you can explore the rich half-timbered houses of Montabaur in a smart way," says Karin Maas, head of the tourist information centre. The digital guide leads locals and visitors through the historic alleyways and draws attention to architectural details. The regional building culture is vividly conveyed on the centuries-old facades - directly on the smartphone.
